WFMU has had to cancel the WFMU Record Fair. The venue has no power and they do not think it will be restored until Saturday. In addition, the NYC transit system is in tatters. The event has not been rescheduled.

SUMMER specials Well it’s a little early to tell you about all that will be available this year, but so far it looks like a ton of Jazz Cds, Classical LPs and CDs, original vintage 60s psychedelic posters from the Gande Ballroom in Detroit and some Fillmore East programs from the 60s. For the dis-en-vinyled – we also have our Astroturf Yardsale section of vintage kitchen wares and clothing!!! Hawaiian shirts are us.
CDs are NEW donations from record companies and collectors, NOT used, returns or defects! Mostly pop + rock recordings. Collectible LPs are priced below book/online value. Hundreds of CDs are priced at $1 to $5 each. Just released NEW & HOT CDs are $5 – $10.
PLUS – 7″ singles – Shelves of music books – African, Reggae & world-music releases – MOST Classical LPs 50 cents to $1 – videos + DVDs ($1-$3)

The site aims to host a comprehensive calendar of Record Shows and Fairs in North America and the UK. Eventually other countries may be added. Events where you can buy LP Vinyl Records, 45s, 12″ vinyl, CDs, Music Memorabilia DVDs and more. The record show scene is growing just as the vinyl scene is growing.
The Vinyl District Record Store Locator App
The calendar also feeds The Vinyl District GPS-based Record Store Locator App. The app is available for iPhone and Android. It shows users record shops near them, has cool social and sharing elements and now uses the RecordShows.net Record Show Calendar to feed the app with upcoming record shows and fairs.
Probably the best record fair in the Eastern USA (maybe in the top 5 worldwide) takes place at the Metropolitan Pavilion from Friday October 28th to Sunday October 30th 2011. It’s the WFMU Record Fair
Hours are:
7pm to 10pm Friday
10am to 7pm Saturday
10am to 7pm Sunday
Admission is $7 each day. Frenzied collectors can pay $25.00 for 4pm admission on Friday and that then gets them in for all three days.
The Metropolitan Pavilion is at 125 West 18th Street, between 6th and 7th Aves.
WFMU broadcasts from the event and there are live musical acts also. This year there is an associated event taking place upstairs called the WFMU RadioVision Festival. “Celebrating radio’s future as it takes on new forms in the digital
age for the medium’s fans, tinkerers and future thinkers.”

If you do decide to come to the show and you have never been before, here are a few tips:
1) Prepare yourself for sensory overload. You will certainly see records here which you have never seen before, and which you will never see again.
2) Stay hydrated. There is a bar and there is (pretty good) pizza, but you’ll definitely want to bring water.
3) Most dealers accept cash only. A few dealers accept credit cards.
4) If you see an interesting table, investigate it right away. Some dealers do not do all three days of the show.
5) If you see an interesting record, buy it immediately. It will likely not be there when you come back.
6) Be prepared to see other people walking around with records you wish you had.
7) Try to be tolerant of other customers and their elbows. Be gently but firm in establishing your personal space. This is New York City and some people can forget themselves when face with all the amazing records and a time crunch.
8) Have a plan. Go through the dealer list and map and plan out a strategy focused on your area of interest. Or just start at one corner and work your way to the next.

The fair was a huge success, and we have over 100 dedicated volunteers to thank for helping WFMU pull off another great event. Gratitude also goes out to all the performers who were involved: the Hamburglars, Ted Leo, Tom Carter, Butts, Dan Friel, the Fabulous Diamonds, and Nelson Loskamp. We can’t wait to do it all over again — the next Record Fair is scheduled for Oct 28 – 30, 2011! The fair runs
Friday October 22nd from 7-10pm, and Saturday and Sunday, the 23rd and 24th, from 10am to 7pm.
Admission is $7. Earlybirds can get in on Friday at 4pm for $25, which includes readmission all weekend.
